This is third part of the ‘Making a Podcast’ series. Each workshop corresponds to a half day or full day of activity.
The first 2 parts should have already been completed.
Radio report
Making a radio report is not easy and involves many elements. For example, discuss the idea of ambient noises that can be heard behind an interview. For example, on a report on the beginning of the school year, you might hear parents being interviewed. Ambient sounds in this case might be the students playing in the school yard. For the purposes of today’s workshop, you won’t be able to achieve that.
Explain that for a report, there shouldn’t be so much material recorded. For example, if a report should last 1.5 minutes, having one hour of recorded material would be cumbersome for the final editing process. Explain how journalists in training should act and present themselves. They should explain clearly what they intend to do, say where it will be played if it will be. This is the same for the interview. Here is an article featuring journalists giving advice on how to do reporting.
Recording the report
Reporters should first elaborate the content and how their report is constructed before summarising it for the presenter.
You should specify before the go to the field, one journalist will record on their smartphone. Supply a microphone that can attach to a smartphone and explain how it works. Ask the reporter to download the Soundcloud app.
They should create a Soundcloud account specifically for this workshop. In connecting to this, they can upload what they have recorded. The facilitator must collect the recordings and copy them – for example to a USB key – as this will be important for the next workshop.
General point: where research is necessary – for preparation for the interview or report on whatever subject – refer to sources on a case-by-case basis. Participants will need to do internet research before going to the reporting site.
