Preparation - 10 min
Prepare blank sheets of paper or blank templates and something to write on.
Introduction - 10 min
Welcome the participants, set them up in the designated area and explain how the activity will take place. Offer a time to speak to make sure everyone has understood.
Main Activity - 30 to 45 min
For the first part of the activity, explain that each participant must draw their “Chinese portrait” on their sheet of paper by answering the different questions you will ask them, starting with “If I were….”. “OR the questions already on the template printed before the activity.
What is important about this activity is that the participants are instructed to tell their stories in pictures. You can directly give them the following sentence structure:
If I were … I would be ….. Because / For / In order to …
For example :
If I were a tree I would be a cherry tree.
To blush with pleasure
To feed the children
Because I was born in the spring
To go further :
Once the cards are filled in, pick up the cards, mix them up. Two choices are possible here :
– You draw a card at random and read the answers. The participants must then guess as quickly as possible who is described by this portrait.
– You ask one person in the group to draw a card at random and read it for the others to guess, and then switch people for each card.
Once a person is identified by his or her portrait, you can ask them to explain their choices and give them the opportunity to present themselves more fully.
Conclusion - 10 min
Give everyone a chance to speak to find out if everyone was able to share what he or she had to share. Ask them to share “what I liked, what I learned, what I missed” so that they can always give constructive feedback.
Mediation tip: to give everyone the opportunity to express themselves, don’t hesitate to go around the table or use a talking stick. For all mediation techniques, see the “Speaking out” sheet.
