Introduction (5 minutes)
- Welcome the participants
- Remind the participants the general objective of the course
- Introduce the session of the day (objective and how long it will be)
Ice-breaking game (10 minutes)
- Form a circle holding hands and facing the center.
- Invite participants to do four actions as directed by the facilitator. These actions are jump in, jump out, jump left, and jump right. For example, if the facilitator says jump in, everyone holding hands has to jump inside the circle. On the other hand, if the facilitator says jump put, everyone has to jump back. Remember while doing the activity to hold each other’s hands and to not let go at any moment.
- Start with copying the facilitator’s directions. For example, when the facilitator says “jump in”, participants should say “jump in” and jump inside. When the facilitator says “jump out”, participants should say “jump out” and follow the direction.
- Now add a twist to make it more challenging. The facilitator will say a direction which participants will follow but they will say the reverse. For example, the facilitator will say “jump in” and participants will jump inside but they will say “jump out”.
Main activity (70 minutes)
Part 1 – Review (10 minutes)
Everybody writes his/her name on the board and says aloud the name and the pronunciation of each letter in his/her name (they can use their notebook to review by themselves how to write their name)
Part 2 – Learning the remaining vowels
- Show the participants the letters A, E, I and O. Ask them in which words did we see them. We saw them in HI, HELLO, HOSPITAL, MARKET and FOO
- Explain that those are vowels. Ask if anyone knows what is a vowel. Explain that a vowel is a speech sound produced by humans when the breath flows out through the mouth without being blocked by the teeth, tongue, or lips. Do a demonstration: Pronounce, with your mouth open, the sounds “A”, then “M”, then “MA”. Ask them to do it as well and ask them if they feel the difference. Repeat as many time as necessary to make sure that everybody understands what is a vowel. Show other examples: “I”, “T”, and “IT”, “D” “O”, “DO”, etc.
- Explain that there are 6 vowels, and we know 4. Now we are going to learn the last 2. Show them the cards for “U”and “Y”. Ask them if they know those letters and if so, where did they see them. Give them some examples:
MY
DUE
- We are also going to learn the word “VOWELS”. Show the cards of “V”, “W” and “S”.
- Ask the participants to find the 6 vowels in their alphabet Sheets. Then ask them to found “V”, “W’ and “S”.
- Ask the participants to copy them in their notebook with the title “VOWELS”. Show them step by step how to ‘draw’ the new letters. Take the time to do it several times, at least each letter should be copied 20 times, more is better.
- Using the cards that match the letters of VOWELS + “U” and “Y”, choose one and ask the participants to say the name of the letter and pronounce it. Ask them to do it several times. You can ask each participant to repeat the name and pronunciation of the letter individually.
Part 3 – Word Race
- Game: Divide the class into two teams. Have one member of each team race to the front of the room and write the first letter of the word HELLO, then MARKET, FOOD, HI, HOSPITAL and then VOWELS on the board (one part of the board for each team). Then the first runner comes back, the second runner starts (like relay race) and has to write the second letter of the word and so on until all the letters learnt today have been written. The first team to complete will win.
Part 4 – Achievement (10 minutes)
The participants, all together, will write their names on one big piece of paper, using many colors making small drawings also. The poster, once completed, will be put in the Ideas Box center.
Part 5 – Evaluation (20 minutes)
Explain: At the end of a course, we always do a small test to make sure that everybody understood the course. This is now the test time. It will be simple questions on what we learnt. It will be an individual test and you will have to answer some questions
Conclusion (10 minutes)
- Thank the participants for their involvement and concentration during the session.

Ask the participants to recite the 26 letters of the alphabet with you. We also learnt how to read simple words in English, and their signification.
