Preparation

This activity involves close physical contact — at times the participants may have to carry each other or lean closely on each other.

Try this game with same-gender groups. The two groups could then play the game one at a time, or make it a competition by using their own separate sheets.

Implementation

Lay the sheets/cloths on the floor. Work out how big the sheet should be — if it is a small group, fold the sheet over. Now ask all the participants to take their shoes off and stand on the sheet. The participants should not have much room to move once they are standing on it together.

Explain that the ground around the sheet is toxic and they are not allowed to step off and touch it.

The aim of the game is to turn the sheet over, without anyone stepping off onto the toxic ground.

Give them enough time to work out how to do this. If they get stuck, encourage them and tell them it can be done as long as the group cooperates. It may take longer than planned, but remind them that it is possible.

Ending

When the activity is over, praise the participants and ask them to sit in a circle to follow up with the questions below.

If they do not mention it themselves, say that this activity is a good reminder of how things may seem impossible at first, but possible when we help each other.
For example:
– Did you enjoy the activity?
– What was difficult about this activity?
– How did you solve the challenge of turning the sheet over?

Tips and tricks for the facilitator: repeat the game instructions several times. Make sure everyone understands the game and follows the instructions.
